Cycling events in the North East of England
Northumberland coast, Durham Dales and Kielder Forest. Empty roads, empty trails, good coffee.
The North East has some of the emptiest roads in England. Northumberland's coast from Amble to Berwick is a dream; the county's interior (Kielder, the Cheviots) offers genuine wilderness cycling. The Dirty Reiver gravel event, based at Kielder, is one of the UK's toughest gravel races.
Durham's Dales — Teesdale, Weardale — give you Hartside and Yad Moss, among the longest sustained climbs in the country. Newcastle and Gateshead support a strong club racing scene around the Croft and Darlington circuits.
