FAQ

What is Cycle CoNNect ?

Cycle CoNNect is a self-service bike hire scheme for getting around Northampton quickly and cheaply. There is a network of 9 Cycle CoNNect docking stations across Northampton where you can hire and return a bicycle and there will be 50 bikes available to hire across the network at any time of the day, every day.

How does it work ?

Cycle CoNNect is very simple. Sign up either online or by calling 01604 372014. Once you've done that, you'll receive a membership number and PIN. Simply key in your membership number and PIN at any of the stations and select a bike to rent. You can return the bike to any station, not just the one you rented it from.

How much does it cost ?

Registration is free, although there will be an initial top-up of £1, which will be credited to your Cycle CoNNect account. The first 30 minutes of every cycle is free, a 30-60 minute journey will cost £1 and thereafter for every hour (or part of an hour) cycle credits will be debited from your Cycle CoNNect account at a rate of £1 up to a maximum of £5 per rental. Unused credits will remain on your account for the duration of your membership

What about Helmets ?

Helmets are not provided as we are unable to guarantee their safety. We do however encourage cyclists to wear a helmet and appropriate clothing.

Can I change my PIN ?

For security reasons you will need to have both your membership number and PIN number. You may change the PIN number to a 4 digit number that is more memorable for you - log into www.cycleconnect.co.uk with your username and password and you can change your PIN online.

What if I find a damaged bike ?

If you find a bicycle that is damaged please tell us by e-mailing northampton@hourbike.com or calling 01604 372014. If you have time it is useful if you can turn the saddle sideways to indicate to other people it is not to be used.

What if the docking station is full ?

In this case you will be able to lock the bike securely to the docking station using the combination lock attached to the bike, and you will just need to call Cycle CoNNect on 01604 372014 or email northampton@hourbike.com to end your hire period.

I don't have my bike's combination lock code ?

If you don't have the bike lock code and you need to lock up your bike, you can retrieve the code online through your phone. Go to www.cycleconnect.co.uk, login using your membership number and PIN, go to "rented bikes" and the system will show you the combination lock codes for any bikes you have out on rent.

What if I have the bike longer than my credit allows ?

If you rent a bike for longer than you have credit for, your account will go into a negative balance, and you will need to top up your account before you can rent another bike. Top up is easy, just log into your account and press the Top-up credit button.

What if the bike I have hired gets stolen / damaged ?

The bike is your responsibility whilst it is rented to you. Please use the combination lock attached to the bike to lock up the bike whilst unattended. Please call Cycle CoNNect 01604 372014 to talk through the issue or leave a message and we can advise you.

I do not know Northampton. Where should I go ?

Each bicycle hire docking station will display a map of the immediate vicinity and show where the nearest docking stations in the area. You can also visit www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/cycling to download the Northampton cycle map.

How will criminal damage to the bikes be managed?

The bikes are designed to specific criteria – to be pleasant to ride, unisex and fully-adjustable. But the frame design and many of the parts of the bikes are not compatible with common retail bikes. This makes them less attractive to steal or to remove parts. The removable parts of the bikes are protected by anti-vandal fixings, requiring specialist tools to fix/remove them.

Is there a minimum age ?

You need to own a debit or credit card to purchase a subscription. Use of the Hourbike system is open to all persons over the age of 12. Persons over the age of 12 but under the age of 18 must have the written permission of a parent or guardian to register to use the system and the written permission of the nominated payer to make payment for the hire of the bike. (written permission to be sent to Hourbike Ltd at 39 Pilgrims Way, Bisley, Surrey GU24 9DQ). Persons over the age of 12 but under the age of 18 must also be proficient to ride on the road.

What if the bike develops a fault and I can't return it ?

Please use the combination lock attached to the bike to lock it securely. Then call Cycle CoNNect on 01604 372014 to advise us. The bike is your responsibility until you have notified us.
